When couples picture a wine country wedding, Napa Valley is often the first destination that comes to mind. And while I love the beauty and variety of weddings throughout Napa, there are several other Northern California wine country regions worth exploring.
Just beyond Napa, Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, and Russian River Valley each offer a distinctive setting for a wedding celebration. From historic estates and sprawling vineyards to lush gardens and redwood surroundings, the character of each region brings something different to the overall experience.
As a floral designer, I love how much the setting can influence the look and feel of a wedding. The landscape, architecture, season, and natural surroundings can all become inspiration for the floral design. Here are three wine country destinations I think are especially worth discovering.
01. Sonoma Valley: Historic Romance
Sonoma Valley has a timeless quality that makes it especially beautiful for couples drawn to classic wine country romance. Spanish-influenced architecture, historic estates, established gardens, and beautiful oak trees create a setting that feels both welcoming and sophisticated.
There is a sense of history here, but the atmosphere can still feel relaxed and personal. Picture an outdoor ceremony surrounded by mature trees, an elegant estate reception, and a long dinner table set among the gardens.
For floral design, I love the idea of embracing that romantic character with garden roses, soft whites, delicate seasonal blooms, and abundant greenery. Arrangements can feel full and layered without becoming overly formal, allowing the natural beauty of the property to remain part of the overall design.
The floral direction: Timeless, romantic arrangements with garden-inspired flowers, soft color palettes, and beautiful natural greenery.
02. Alexander Valley: Golden Wine Country
For couples who envision a wedding surrounded by expansive vineyard views and rolling hills, Alexander Valley offers a beautiful interpretation of wine country.
Located in Sonoma County, this region is known for its broad agricultural landscapes, vineyard estates, and warm, sunlit scenery. The setting feels open and spacious, making it a lovely choice for couples who want their celebration to feel connected to the surrounding landscape.
I would take a slightly more organic approach to the floral design here. Seasonal blooms, warm neutrals, interesting textures, and natural shapes can complement the golden tones of the landscape without competing with the views. Think arrangements that feel thoughtfully gathered, with movement and dimension rather than perfectly structured forms.
The beauty of this setting is that the flowers don't need to do all the talking. They can work alongside the landscape, adding color, texture, and personality to an already beautiful environment.
The floral direction: Organic, textural arrangements featuring seasonal flowers, warm neutrals, and natural movement.
03. Russian River Valley: Lush & Enchanting
Russian River Valley offers a softer, more secluded feeling than some of the region's more expansive vineyard settings. With redwood groves, gardens, winding roads, and beautiful vineyard landscapes, it has a naturally romantic atmosphere.
For couples who love the idea of a wedding immersed in nature, this region offers plenty of inspiration. The surroundings can feel intimate and peaceful, with a sense of discovery that makes a wedding weekend especially memorable.
This is where I would lean into layered greenery, woodland-inspired floral elements, and flowers with beautiful natural movement. Rather than creating arrangements that feel overly polished or structured, I love the idea of designs that feel as though they belong in the setting. Interesting foliage, soft blooms, organic shapes, and thoughtful layering can create a look that feels effortless while still being refined.
The floral direction: Lush greenery, natural textures, layered flowers, and romantic arrangements inspired by the surrounding landscape.
Let the Landscape Inspire the Flowers
One of the things I love most about designing wedding flowers in wine country is that no two settings are exactly alike. Even within the same region, a historic estate, an open vineyard, and a garden surrounded by trees can inspire completely different floral directions.
The most beautiful wedding designs don't necessarily begin with a particular flower or color palette. Sometimes they begin with the setting itself.
Whether you're drawn to the historic romance of Sonoma Valley, the golden vineyard views of Alexander Valley, or the lush surroundings of Russian River Valley, I love the opportunity to create floral designs that feel connected to the place and to the couple celebrating there.
If you're planning a wine country wedding and are beginning to envision the flowers, I'd love to hear what you're dreaming up. Let's create something that feels completely at home in your setting—and entirely your own.
